Carbognano, Fontana Nova also called ‘O Mascherò”

A first fountain was built by will of Giulio Cesare Colonna in order to make a service for public use. Even if this first fountain temporarily succeeded in satisfying the expectations, it was necessary to realize a new one, the one still in use today, under the aegis of Francesco Colonna, realized in 1596 by Andrea de Tognetti Scalpellino on designs by Troiano Schiratti.

The fountain of Santa Maria was built starting from 1583 for the double purpose of decorating the homonymous square and supplying water to the part of the village along the road axis to Fabrica di Roma.

Carbognano, Fontana Vecchia – Old Fountain

Through the sources we find mentioned the fountain Vecchia since the beginning of the XVI century. The oldest fountain in the village of Carbognano was probably created with the birth of the village itself. Placed in the most upstream point, in the past it could serve all the daily needs.

Carbognano, Castle wash-house

The trough was used until quite recently for washing clothes and as a meeting place – particularly for Carbognano’s female population. The structure consists of three tanks, each dedicated to a different phase of the laundry process. The trough was a gift to Carbognano’s population by Prince Colonna (XVII sec.), whose crest can still be identified on the wall.

Carbognano, Wash house of Santa Maria

At the beginning of the seventeenth century for the needs of the women of the village, by the will of Francesco Colonna, Lord of Carbognano, and the Community, was made to realize the washhouse of Santa Maria thanks to the work of Pietro mason and stonemason in Carbognano designed by architect Paulo Maggi.
